A Holiday Series: Stocking Stuffer Gift Guide

As far back as 1823, when Santa “fill’d all the stockings; then turn’d with a jerk,” (“A Visit from St. Nicholas” Clement Clark Moore) stockings have been a part of Christmas. Legend has it that a widowed man with three daughters was having a difficult time making ends meet. He was concerned that their poverty would prevent his daughters from marrying. According to the story, St. Nicholas was traveling through their village and heard their story. Knowing that the man’s pride would not allow him to accept charity, St. Nicholas slid down the chimney and filled their stockings drying by the fire with gold coins. No one knows for sure if this story is true but that is how the tradition of putting gifts in stockings started.

Stockings are one of my favorite parts of Christmas. The tiny things put inside a stocking can be fun, whimsical items or useful, practical, small gifts. Often, they are things you wouldn't normally buy for yourself. Stockings are the unexpected treasures of Christmas. Here are a few of my favorite stocking stuffer ideas for this year
